“Having [school supplies] and [some new clothes] before school starts really makes the kids feel confident, ready, and excited to start the school year off right. For me it is a relief to know I was able to figure out how to proceed for them.” – Foster Parent

Starting a new school year comes with a long list of needs: backpacks, notebooks, pencils, new shoes, and more. For foster families, getting everything ready can add another expense and responsibility during an already busy time.

That’s where The Foster Alliance’s annual Back-to-School Drive comes in. Each year, communities across Arizona – and now New Mexico! – help provide children in foster care with new backpacks, school supplies, and other essentials so they can walk into the classroom prepared and ready to learn.

What the First Day of School Can Look Like

A new school year already comes with a long to-do list, and when a child enters a new foster placement or changes schools, caregivers may need to get them school-ready with little notice.

The Foster Alliance’s Back-to-School Drive helps take some of that responsibility off their plate by providing children with new, age-appropriate school essentials, including:

  • Backpacks
  • Notebooks, folders, and paper
  • Pencils, pens, markers, and other classroom supplies
  • Lunch boxes and water bottles
  • Other grade-appropriate essentials

Having these items ready means foster families have one less expense and one less errand to manage. For children, it means showing up with the same basic supplies as their classmates and having what they need to participate from day one.

A backpack can’t make every transition easier. But it can make getting ready for school easier — and that’s one practical way a community can support both children and the families caring for them.

How a Community Changes That Story

Behind every backpack is a community of people working together to make that first day a little easier.

Every Supporter Becomes Part of the Story

Long before a backpack reaches a child, a support network is already at work:

  • Donors give financially or purchase new backpacks and school supplies.
  • Businesses, schools, churches, and community groups organize supply drives and rally their networks.
  • Volunteers sort supplies and assemble backpacks.
  • Community partners help expand the program’s reach and provide additional resources.
  • Caseworkers and foster families help connect those resources with the children who need them.

Then, caseworkers and foster families help connect those resources with children who need them.

Each person plays a different role, but they’re all part of the same story.

You may not meet the child carrying the backpack you helped provide. You may not see their first day of school or know which notebook becomes their favorite. But your support still becomes part of that experience.

That’s what foster care support can look like: a community of allies coming together so children and the families caring for them have what they need, when they need it.

Supporting Children Where They Are

The Foster Alliance works alongside caseworkers, foster and kinship families, community partners, volunteers, and supporters to help essential resources reach children in foster care across Arizona and New Mexico.

Because every community is different, local support matters. A school supply drive in Phoenix, a donation in Flagstaff, or growing community involvement in New Mexico all help strengthen the network available to children and families.

As that network grows, so does the ability to meet children where they are and respond to what families need most.

Why This Drive Matters

The impact of back-to-school donations reaches beyond the supplies inside each backpack. That support can make the transition easier for children, foster families, and the caseworkers supporting them.

Helping Children Feel Ready to Learn

Think about how it feels to walk into a classroom prepared.

You have your backpack. Your pencils are sharpened. Your notebooks are ready. When the teacher asks everyone to take out a folder or grab a marker, you have one too.

For a child in foster care, those seemingly ordinary moments can matter.

Having the school supplies they need means one less difference to navigate in the classroom. Instead of worrying about missing supplies, they can focus on participating in class, meeting new friends, and getting comfortable in their new environment.

A backpack won’t define a child’s school year. But starting with the right supplies can help create something every child deserves: the opportunity to begin on more equal footing with their classmates and feel ready for what comes next.

Reducing Stress for Foster Families

Back-to-school season can be busy and expensive for any household. For foster families welcoming a child into their home, those demands can come alongside appointments, paperwork, new routines, school enrollment, and the everyday work of helping a child feel safe and supported.

Providing backpacks and school essentials removes one more item from that list.

When the community helps provide these necessities, foster families have one less task and expense to manage as they help the child in their care adjust, settle in, and prepare for school.

Helping Caseworkers Meet Immediate Needs

Caseworkers often support children and families with many needs at once, especially during busy transition periods like the beginning of a school year.

Having access to community-supported resources gives them another way to connect children and families with essential items when those needs arise. Whether a child enters care shortly before school starts or needs supplies after the first bell has already rung, having resources available can make responding to those needs simpler and faster.

It’s one more example of what becomes possible when caseworkers, families, community organizations, and supporters work together.

The Difference Your Support Makes

There isn’t just one way to help foster children during back-to-school season.

  • Make a financial donation
  • Donate new backpacks or school supplies
  • Purchase items from The Foster Alliance’s wishlist
  • Host a drive with your business, church, school, or community group
  • Volunteer to sort supplies or build backpacks

While back-to-school season may be ending, the need for backpacks and school essentials continues. Children enter foster care and families face changing needs throughout the school year. A $58 gift can provide one full backpack, while $105 can provide a backpack and a pair of shoes, and $139 can provide a backpack, outfit, and shoes.

And school supplies are only one part of the support children and families need. The Foster Alliance provides essential resources all year long, including clothing, personal care items, safe beds, birthday gifts, and more.

Whether you donate today, host a drive, volunteer, or support The Foster Alliance throughout the year, there are many ways to help children and families whenever needs arise.
